Challenges & Solution

Cyclic Wet–Dry, Thermal Gradients, Heavy Maintenance Traffic — Managed

Water-level cycling & drying: Macro PP fibers limit crack widths formed by restraint and temperature swings, helping keep surfaces tight and serviceable.

Impact & abrasion: Added toughness resists abrasion from waterborne debris and vehicle traffic on the crest road.

Anchors, drains, joints: Fibers protect arrises around drain outlets, anchor pockets, and joint details, reducing spalls and patching.

Corrosion-free durability: Polypropylene macro fibers do not rust, ideal for saturated zones and splash areas compared with steel fibers.

Tighter Cracks, Higher Toughness, Less Maintenance

Construction teams reported narrower crack widths after temperature swings, cleaner joint edges at drains and anchors, and improved abrasion resistance on crest pavements. Fiber-modified sections support extended maintenance intervals and reliable reservoir operation.

Project Overview

Tough, Crack-Resistant Concrete for Dam Crest & Spillway Works

The Fengxin upper reservoir includes dam crest slabs, spillway chutes, approach channels, and maintenance pavements exposed to cyclic water levels, temperature swings, and vehicular loads. To limit shrinkage/temperature cracking and add structural toughness without corrosion risk, the mix adopted Ecocrete™ PP Macro “Steel-Like” Fiber. The embossed macro strands create an interlocking network that bridges wider cracks, improves impact/abrasion resistance, and supports long service life in wet-dry environments.
